As you may have guessed, we’re big fans of hot dogs! But one thing we never thought we’d be talking about is hot dog-flavored ice cream.
However, the Museum of Ice Cream Chicago surprised us all when they created this “treat.”
The unusual creation saw hot dog-flavored ice cream served in a pink poppy seed bun with pickles and mustard, of course!
The co-CEO and museum’s creator, Maryellis Bunn, revealed more about the creation:
“We worked with a Chicago-based bakery to make the buns, and then there’s a hot dog-flavored soft serve inside. And no ketchup, Chicago-style.”
What does hot dog-flavored ice cream actually taste like?
Well, you get all of the spiced and smoky notes you would expect from an all-beef sausage, yet there is a sweet, pleasant undercurrent.
The rosy bun is soft like a pillow, with a little sprinkling of poppy seeds. It was custom-made by Milano Bakery, a Joilet-based company.
Ironically, this hot dog-inspired treat is vegetarian, so everyone can enjoy this meaty soft serve.
But will you actually enjoy it?
Well, that’s one question we cannot answer for you. However, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that it is quite a polarizing dessert. Some people have been surprised by how much they like the salty-sweet combo. Others have politely spat out the strange ice cream flavor.
Some are too scared to try it.
The toppings provide the perfect finishing touch
As is the case with any hot dog, it is all about the toppings, and that’s certainly the case here!
You can expect some petite gherkins, which substitute the dill pickle spears, and a drizzle of mustard, providing a welcome hit of acid that counteracts the sweetness of the ice cream.
Do you fancy some hot dog-flavored ice cream?
Is your mouth watering yet?
Or, do you feel like you need a sick bag?
If you fall into the former category, why not try the ice cream?
If you are a hot dog lover, you may be surprised by how much you enjoy this unusual treat.
The Museum of Ice Cream is situated at 435 N Michigan Ave. It is open every day, except on Tuesdays, from 10 am until 7 pm. When you purchase a ticket, you can enjoy unlimited treats from five different ice cream stations that are situated throughout the museum. This means that you can have as much hot dog-flavored ice cream as you wish.
Hot dog-flavored ice cream is not the only hot dog-inspired sweet treat we have been treated to
Hot dog-flavored ice cream may sound weird and wonderful, but it’s not the first time a company has taken the humble hot dog and used it for inspiration. Last year, Archie McPhee, a novelty toy and candy store based in Seattle, Washington, released hot dog candy canes for the holiday season.
Speaking about the creation, Archie McPhee’s Director of Awesome, David Wahl, said the following:
“Every year we do candy canes with unique flavors. Last year we did ketchup, the most popular American condiment. This year we thought, what’s more American than hot dogs?”
The hot dog-flavored candy canes proved to be very popular as well, as they sold out pretty quickly.
The love for hot dogs has been taken to the extreme!
So, what will it be?
Or, are you going to give the hot dog-flavored ice cream a try?
A treat for the brave, that’s for sure, but you may be surprised by just how good it tastes.
