While we all love ketchup and mustard on our hot dogs, it can be fun to switch things up occasionally!
And no, we don’t mean a few fried onions or a bit of crispy bacon. We’re talking about unusual toppings that you would never expect to put on a hot dog.
We hope you are ready for a bit of adventure, as we have some weird but wonderful hot dog toppings for you to try out.
While some of these suggestions may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you serve hot dogs, we promise you that you won’t regret it.
1. Doritos, Bacon, BBQ Sauce, and Pulled Pork
We’re going to start off with a creation we saw on Instagram, and we couldn’t wait to try it.
This hot dog is rolled in Doritos, and then it is deep-fried. If you read our most recent post on Hot Dogs From Around The World, you’ll know it’s common in some locations to deep-fry your hot dog rather than boil or grill it.
Once you have fried it, it is then topped with bacon, BBQ sauce, and pulled pork. The surprises don’t end there either, as it is served in a pretzel bun, delivering a delicious, salty flavor.
2. Caramel Popcorn
There are lots of different types of savory flavored popcorn available nowadays, so there is no reason why caramel popcorn won’t taste amazing on top of a hot dog.
You get that delicious dose of sweetness to complement the saltiness of the hot dog, as well as that delightful crunch. A surprising yet winning combination!
3. Mac and Cheese
In Amsterdam, they have combined pizza and hot dogs to create the perfect junk food combination, drenching frankfurters in mozzarella, pizza sauce, and pepperoni. Incredible!
So, why not make another junk food combination work wonders?
The whole world seems to have gone mad for mac and cheese as of late, and with cheese always being a fantastic topping, why not take it up a notch with mac and cheese instead?
4. French Croissant
Although this suggestion is technically not a hot dog topping, it is a great way of spicing up your hot dog.
Thinking outside of the regular hot dog bun is an easy yet effective way of creating a different taste sensation.
Using a croissant instead will add interesting flavor and texture that your hot dog would otherwise not have.
5. Blue Cheese, Guacamole, and Fried Egg
There are some strong flavors in this hot dog, and they work really well together, creating a breakfast-style hot dog. We certainly would not mind starting our day with this creation in the morning.
We have our Canadian friends to thank for this one. Gravy, cheese curds, French fries, and a hot dog… what else could you possibly need for a summer meal?
7. Caesar Salad Hot Dogs
Yes, this is a weird suggestion. Why would you combine a hot dog and a salad? It may sound strange, but trust us, it’s good.
You’re only going to need a little bit of lettuce, delivering that delightful crunch while the caesar dressing tastes amazing.
Our personal favorite when it comes to this recipe, though, is the Parmesan crisps, which provided a cheesy, crunchy, yet luxurious finishing touch.
8. Crushed Salted Chips
We know that you’re reading this and nodding your head right now. It’s not the most outrageous suggestion you will find on this list, but it is definitely one of the best ones.
If you’re low on groceries in the house and you fancy a hot dog, grabbing a bag of salted chips will never let you down as a topping. Crunch them up, sprinkle them on top of your hot dog, and finish off with some ketchup.
A real treat!
9. Gravy, Mashed Potatoes, and Onions
Is there anything more comforting than mashed potatoes and gravy? We think not! You may not think this makes sense for a hot dog topping, but we promise you it works.
In the UK, a lot of people have sausage, mash, and gravy as one of their traditional weekday meals, so it is based on a tried and tested concept.
10. Loaded Buffalo Hot Dogs
Mozzarella, hot sauce, and blue cheese. Is your mouth watering yet?
This may not be the most shocking suggestion in the culinary world, but now is the time to try it if you have never tried it before.
11. Peanut Butter
We don’t know if you saw, but there was a bit of peanut butter and hot dog trend going around on social media! Most people were repulsed by the thought.
But those who tried it realized that it had potential. If you are brave enough to try this topping, we would recommend a bit of chili jelly to go with it.
12. Duck Sauce and Mango Slaw
For a sweet and sticky treat, generously brush your hot dogs with duck sauce before cooking. You can then finish this creation with some mango slaw.
Your taste buds will thank you for this one. It’s full of flavor and full of texture. A surprisingly great treat.
13. Ramen Noodles
If you have a packet of ramen noodles in your cupboard, there’s no time to waste; get the hob on, prepare your ramen noodles, and serve them on top of a hot dog.
Incredibly satisfying – you won’t regret it.
14. Pineapple, Teriyaki, and Bacon
Are you the sort of person that likes to have pineapple on their pizza? If so, you are going to love this hot dog suggestion.
Pineapple works beautifully when diced and sprinkled on top of a hot dog, especially when served with teriyaki sauce, scallions, and bacon. Yummy!
15. Corn Chutney
Last but not least, we have corn chutney.
If you have never made corn chutney before, we’re sure you will be hooked. It tastes so good that you do not even have to add it to anything. But we all know that hot dogs make everything taste better.
But how do you make this delicious chutney? Combine honeydew melon with tomatoes, celery, and dill. Amazing!
